SKNLP Opposes New Public Accounts Committee Bill

St Kitts and Nevis (WINN): The Opposition is declaring it will not support the Public Accounts Bill scheduled for Parliament Thursday (August 10), accusing the government of moving to water down the powers of the Public Accounts Committee.

An earlier incarnation of the Public Accounts Committee established in 2010 comprised both government and opposition members of parliament and was tasked with several responsibilities including oversight of authorized expenditure during the financial year, examination of accounts in any department of government and summoning any public officer to explain or produce records or documents that the Committee deemed relevant.

But as Prime Minister Dr Timothy Harris noted at a recent Press conference, that Public Accounts Committee did not fulfill its mandate.
